We started our first day of camp with a morning introduction, name tags, and bagels. Shortly after, each group was tasked with a classroom scavenger hunt which helped students begin become familiar with the campus. After our scavenger hunt, groups played different team bonding and "get to know you" games. The students were also given four different summer reading choices in which will be their first assignment of high school.
This morning the campers were given their class schedules. We followed this up with in depth tour of the campus led by our senior mentors. The idea of these tours is to help the student learn exactly where their classes are located.
The campers were also given their iPads today! Amy Wright gave each group a brief intro on how to use the 'OnCampus' website where students can access all of their schedules, assignments, important info and more. The iPads will be used to access their summer reading books and more throughout the duration of camp.
Today, campers had the opportunity to look at two of Vermont's colleges, and Southwest Technical Center. One group took a trip to Castleton College, while the other went to CCV and Southwest. The idea of this mini filed trip was to show to campers what they might me working toward, or some of BBA's programs available to them in their future high school career.
The students had a very rewarding and immersive experience at Southwest Tech today. The tour consisted of three different "mini classes" including culinary arts, pre-law, and auto-mechanics. Campers had the chance to participate in hands on activities including taking their own fingerprints and creating swans made out of apples. Southwest tech is open to Juniors and Seniors at BBA with different 2 year programs such as cosmetology, forestry, automotive, culinary arts, graphic design and more. Completion of a two year program at Southwest can even result in certifications.
The Community College of Vermont in Bennington welcomed the soon to be BBA freshmen with open arms today. During this visit our Success campers got to partake in two 15 minute classes with some of CCV's professors; one class being Anatomy and the other, Borders.
The Dene Farm offers different types of classes for BBA students to expand their knowledge on plants, farming, and uses for herbs. Some of Burr and Burton's own students volunteer or even work part time at the farm over summer. Dene farm includes multiple gardens, green house(s), animal farms and an indoor classroom.
BBA's Mountain Campus, located in Peru, is a semester long opportunity to learn more about the wilderness, survival, camping and wildlife. During this semester, students will still earn core class credits. In addition, they will learn how to survive in the forest and make their own food and set up tents, hammocks etc. The semester is concluded with a hike and 3 day solo, no phones camping experience where students will apply what they learned during their time here.
Today, campers got the chance to have a more in depth tour of Burr and Burton's visual and performing arts facilities. Travis Kline, tour leader and ceramics/visual arts teacher showed students where the ceramics visual art, design, photography, cinematography, robotics, animation, graphic design, digital art, dance, instrumental, music production and theatre classes are offered.
In addition to the arts tour, students also worked on some team bonding and problem solving activities at Burr and Burton's low ropes course.
Today was all about fun! Campers finally had time to climb the high ropes course, and also a chance to have a bit of free time with choices like lifting in the weight room, taking photos with cameras around campus, whiffle ball, tinkering with legos and playing black jack.
Today was the first day of our "intensives" where campers got to choose between art, Dene Farm, Mountain Campus, STEM and athletics. Each group got a chance to participate in more hands on activities, and have a glimpse of the available choices at BBA.
Day two of our intensives, the groups broke out again and continued where they left off. Today the athletics group had the opportunity to take a trip to the Rutland Rock Climbing Gym, which is used by Burr and Burton's very own rock climbing team for practices. The Dene Farm group harvested potatoes and fed goats today.
This was the final day of our intensives, the STEM group built boats fit for humans out of cardboard, arts students played charades, athletics played corn hole.
